SAPPORO’S HISTORY
Sapporo is a major city in Japan. It is located on the
Southwestern Hokkaiao Island. Sapporo was established as
a planned city in 1871 and became the capital of Hokkaido
Prefecture in 1886. The city is a popular winter sports center,
thus hosting the winter Olympic Games in 1972. It is also home to Hokkaiao
University (1876), Hokkai Gakeun University (1950) and Sapporo University
(1867). The population of Sapporo is about 1.7 million.
